Most brands are built backwards. To compete and grow, focus goes to new identities, campaigns, portfolio expansions. But in doing this, the brand loses meaning — and every new launch gets harder to land. The work might look good. But without a clear strategic foundation, it doesn't hold.

Identifying what makes your brand authentic — and translating that into strategies each part of your business can actually act on — is the foundation of successful business today.

Great strategy differentiates a soulful company from a sterile one, and a timeless company from a trendy one. We work with leaders who want to build strategically — balancing speed with quality, and vision with execution.

Hilton

How do you build a new class of hotels that raises the standard for business travel?

Business travel had changed, but the hotels hadn't. The segment was dominated by brands built for a different era, serving a traveller who no longer existed. Hilton saw the gap and set out to build something truly new: a brand that would meet the modern business traveller where they actually were. Not just in terms of amenities, but in terms of identity, aspiration, and what a hotel could mean to them.

We led the complete brand strategy: who this guest was, what they actually wanted, what the brand needed to stand for, and how every touchpoint from check-in to checkout would deliver on that promise. The work had to align internal teams, external partners, and operators who were being asked to sign deals before a single property existed. It launched as Tempo Hotels, with 70+ deals signed, an impressive feat at the beginning of the 2020 pandemic.

How might a premium lifestyle brand enter the private members club category?

In a post-pandemic society, private membership clubs were opening globally at an extraordinary pace, from brands with no background in hospitality. The value to our client was clear: a timely way to build deeper relationships with customers and extend their lifetime value. Yet the decision to enter the category wasn't obvious. They were left wondering whether the risks outweighed the reward, and if they did enter, how to do it meaningfully.

We led the strategic assessment: evaluating market whitespace, competitive positioning locally and globally, and company positioning to determine the risks and rewards of entering the space, what commitment it required, and how they could carve out a real whitespace.

How do you turn a mountain of consumer data into a story that empowers and inspires teams?

The client had invested heavily in consumer research (surveys, panels, tracking studies) but the data had never been synthesised into something actionable. Teams were drowning in findings and starved of direction. The ask was deceptively simple: make sense of it, and make it matter.

Working alongside a McKinsey team, we led the strategic synthesis: identifying the patterns that mattered, building an audience framework that gave teams a shared language for the consumer, and packaging it in a way that didn't just inform but actually changed how people thought about the work.

Trusted by C-suite executives and senior leaders for 15+ years, across top agencies in New York, London, and Amsterdam.

Tensile was built on careers at Sylvain, 21st Century Brands, Publicis, Pereira O'Dell, and AKQA: agencies known for rigorous thinking and uncommonly good work.

Over those careers, we found that great strategy needs to be more than smart or provocative. It has to hold, it has to move, and it has to flow easily from upstream to downstream. We build thinking that withstands pressure: clear enough to align a leadership team, strong enough to shape a company for years, and flexible enough to grow with a brand.

We are a collective of independent strategists, researchers, designers, and creative directors across Europe and the US, assembled around the specific demands of each project. Our mission is to deliver exceptionally high-value work, efficiently.
